Why Home Insurance Is Important

Owning a home can sometimes feel like on huge list of expenses that you are constantly working your way through. Some of these expenses can be prioritised and some cannot. For example, while you may be able to relegate new carpets or a new paint job to the 'when we're on top of things' pile, there are other costs, such as home insurance, that need to take the top spot on your list. And here's why...
You don't have a crystal ball
No one can see into the future (if we could, we'd all be winning the lottery and I'm pretty sure we'd have gone out and bought stocks in Google when it was just a twinkle in a computer programmer's eye). Because of this, we also can't predict when a flood, storm, fire, earthquake or rogue herd of elephants is going to wreak havoc on our stable existences.
We live in the age of the lawsuit
Awful as it is to consider, people can sue for just about everything these days. Home insurance can also protect you from having to fork out large sums of cash for incidents resulting in injury which may occur on your property. Of course you can't imagine one of your friends suing you, but several people you barely know have access to your home on a regular basis-repairmen, cleaners, delivery drivers---the list goes on, and the mind boggles at the multitude of ways there are to injure oneself in the average family home.
You can't control the actions of others
As security-conscious, safety-conscious and alert you may be, you can only control a finite amount of factors-none of which include the actions of others. A fire that starts in the apartment next door can quite easily (and quickly) destroy your entire home, regardless of home many times you replaced the batteries on the smoke detector or how vigilant you are with the electric heater.
Your contents are more valuable than you think
Especially if you're younger or just starting out in a home, you may not think you possess all that much of value. You should always include contents insurance in your home insurance package, because it's not necessarily the market value of the contents in your home that matters, it's how much you'd have to fork out to replace it if it were stolen or destroyed. Think about your wardrobe alone-were you to lose all of your clothes in a fire it would cost an incredible amount to replace each item. This is where you need to be smart when estimating what you're really worth-always consider the worst case scenario.
Protecting your home and contents is vitally important, and tempting fate by not purchasing insurance can only lead to heartache.
